EDAData

EDAData are a business intelligence service in the US providing analysis of large-item equipment purchases across many industries. Their traditional sales approach was to walk customers through a webex demo of their system. RTC developed a microsite in which a virtual (video) presenter would take a potential customer through a personalised overview of the tools. This released EDA’s sales team to focus on closing deals. Individual sections of video were personalised by among others name, industry, US state, date, business type. Each section of video was then intercut with a question card potentially taking the visitor through a different route through the presentation.

I developed the flash platform that managed the states of playing videos and question cards and submitted responses back to the underlying user database that in turn synchronised back to EDA’s CRM system. Automated email alerts were sent to inform appropriate sales people when visitors completed the demo. I also created a secure javascript/prototpye driven custom reporting dashboard showing live and historical visitors as well as summary statistics.

39% of visitors completed the 20+ minute presentation 74% of whom requested a quote.

sing with lips allowed visitors to create a dynamically mixed music videoSing With Lips In conjunction with agency Global for client Microsoft to promote the XBox Game Lips #1 hits. Over a thousand performances were recorded of members of the public singing Lily Allen’s The Fear. I developed the publishing system that integrated with encoding.com to automatically cut and encode each of these performances into 40 segments (in two different output formats) and co-developed the flash client that allowed real-time reassembly so visitors to the site could see different performers singing each line of the song while remaining perfectly in sync with the music. This led to a staggeringly large number of possible different mixes. After creating a mix, visitors could send it on to their friends e.g. by posting a link on facebook.

vm.manutd.com

manutd1A personalised viral video service developed by Real Time Content for Manchester United. Visitors to the site (available as a menu item in the fanzone section of the main manutd.com website) could choose their favourite goal, trick and celebration from the 07/08 season. They were able to instantly view an assembled video of their chosen highlights with their name, message and a chosen recipient’s name displayed as overlay. After viewing they were able to send the video on via email to one or more friends.

The site consisted of a set of php pages with embedded flash video players. I developed the php and mysql backend to store chosen parameters and track user activity on all pages from video creation, through email opening to recipients creating their own videos. A background email scheduler was developed to handle sending of email to recipients via smtp that was able to handle potentially large volumes of email.

Informal Video Communications

Between 2003 and 2008 I studied for a Doctorate in Engineering at UCL

Visual Awareness to Support Connectedness and Informal Communication

The use of automatically captured and displayed images or video between pairs of individuals or households in oce or domestic situations, can support awareness leading to a feeling of connectedness and in turn informal communication. The use of images or video can be a calm technology, permitting sucient disclosure, while in the right reciprocal, intimate circumstances not exceeding permissible invasion of privacy. This disclosure includes the perception of emotion to support awareness and also allow easier transition into video communication.
This thesis investigates the use of automatic capture and display of images and video to support awareness (visual awareness) and connectedness, with a view to creating more informal video based communication both between pairs of households and between oce workers. It discusses the importance of among others distance, privacy, control, automation, ambience and location in creating visual awareness.
The thesis reports the design of prototypes to support visual awareness in the oce and the home, introducing the concept of the `video snapshot’. The results of two longitudinal eld trials of these prototypes are presented; Visual awareness can make people feel more aware and closer to each other, stimulating a desire to communicate without undue compromises in privacy.
An experiment into the e ects of di erent display forms on the perception of emotion is reported, discussing the relative importance of motion over colour for representing emotional arousal and the potential e ects on connectedness. Findings are assessed and areas for further study discussed.
